Sleep Most of people spend one third of their life SLEEPING
Maybe MORE !!!!!!
If Sleep represents that part of our Life , how comes that in all medical schools we all only have few hours after 6 to 8 intensive years !!!!!
In the last 30 tears more studies , researches and efforts were done to study that phenomena or that essential part of our life
In USA more than 1/3 of traffic accidents are due to Sleep apnea

Sleep A natural periodic state of rest for the mind and body In which the eyes usually close and consciousness is completely or partially lost.
There is a decrease in bodily movement and responsiveness to external stimuli.
During sleep the brain undergoes a characteristic cycle of brain-wave activity that includes intervals of dreaming.

Two major divisions of sleep are :-
Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) [the restful phase of sleep] about 75%
Rapid Eye Movement (REM) [is the dream phase]
"REM" Rapid Eye Movement is defined as the rapid periodic jerky movement of the eyes during certain stages of the sleep cycle when dreaming takes place. There are 5 phases or stages of sleep that are repeated approximately every 90 minutes (sleep stages and sleep phases) in each night.
Researchers and scientists have divided non-REM sleep into four stages, which accounts for about 75% of total sleep.
In each stage, brain waves become progressively larger and slower, sleep becomes deeper.
After reaching stage 4, the deepest period, the pattern reverses, and sleep becomes progressively lighter until REM sleep, the most active period, occurs.
This complete sleep cycle typically occurs about once every 90 minutes in humans.

Sleep phases : 1 phase NREM 25%
4 phases REM 75%
Once you lie down in bed and close your eyes you drift into a transitional phase of sleep (stage 1),
where you are half-awake and half-asleep. This stage lasts approximately 5 minutes, until you drift into a deeper sleep (stage 2).
As you continue to sleep, you drift into an still deeper sleep (stage 3).
You eventually return to stage 2 after some time in stage 3. All of those stages of sleep are known as NREM sleep About an hour and half after initially falling asleep,
the first REM sleep period begins.
REM sleep is where dreams occur.
Brain activity somewhat resembles being awake, but the muscles are very relaxed.
This dreaming time typically lasts 5 to 15 minutes
and as soon it is over, you drift back into stage 2. Your sleep alternates between stage 2 and REM over the course of the night, with the REM stages getting progressively longer through the night.
Twenty to twenty-five percent of all sleeping time is spent dreaming (REM), even if you can’t remember your dreams when you wake up.
Normal EEG waveforms.
Examples of alpha, beta, theta, and delta electroencephalography "EEG"frequencies.
Alpha waves - 8-13 Hz
Beta waves - Greater than 13 Hz
Theta waves - 3.5-7.5 Hz
Delta waves - 3 Hz or less

Time & Quantity of Sleep: Different people sleep for different lengths of time. For some, 4 hours a night is adequate to function normally. Others require as much as 10. The average is somewhere around 7 and a half hours.
It is the quantity of sleep that keeps you fresh and alert till next night . Night is the best time for quality of sleep A short nape in the afternoon is OK but not more than 30 minutes It is Highly recommended to sleep on your side
